Melzer Bird was the nephew of Gardner Bird.
Gardner Bird induced him to come to Michigan from his native Ontario County,
New York. Upon arrival in 1833 he acquired land, 120 acres in
Section 14, adjacent to his Uncle Gardner. The next year (1834) he
returned to New York, gathered up his young family of a wife and one daughter,
Catherine, and returned to Brighton Township.
